The Group Room® to Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day With Live Broadcast from City of Hope on June 4

LOS ANGELES—June 1, 2000—The Group Room--the nationally syndicated radio talk show about cancer--will celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day, Sunday, June 4, with a live remote broadcast live from the City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, Calif.

The broadcast will air from 1-3 p.m. PT (4-6 p.m. ET) on LA Talk 1110 AM and in other select cities throughout the United States, including New York, Washington DC, Memphis and Tampa. The show—the world’s largest cancer support group--reaches more than 300,000 listeners a week and is also simulcast worldwide via the Internet (www.vitaloptions.org).

The event is free to the public and patients, survivors, family members, friends and health-care professionals are welcome to participate as audience members.

“As a 17-year breast cancer survivor, it is an honor to join my fellow 8.4 million cancer survivors throughout the United States in marking this day dedicated to knowledge, hope and inspiration,” said Selma R. Schimmel, host of The Group Room and founder and president of Vital Options® TeleSupport® Cancer Network, the Los-Angeles-based not-for-profit national cancer communications, support and advocacy organization that produces the program in association with Premiere Radio Networks.

“It is fitting that this broadcast will take place at City of Hope, a leading cancer center that focuses on hope, as well as science and medicine,” she added.

The broadcast’s guest physician will be renowned bone marrow transplant (bmt) expert Dr. Stephen J. Forman, chief of physicians and director of hematology/bmt at City of Hope. He will join Schimmel and The Group Room’s medical oncologist Dr. Michael Van Scoy-Mosher (who also serves as consultant for physician relations at City of Hope), radiation oncologist Dr. Leslie Botnick and therapist Halina Irving.

All phone calls to The Group Room are screened by a licensed oncology social worker. Callers can enter discussions by dialing 1-800-GRP-ROOM (1-800-477-7666).

During the week, individuals can reach Vital Options at 818-508-5657 for support or to receive more information about cancer resources or stations carrying the broadcast. To register for the remote broadcast, call 1-800-477-7666 or 1-818-788-5225.
